where does the

I don’t know a lot about Guantanamo Bay. I’ve, of course, heard mostly bad things, as everyone has, and I read that Obama plans to close it – though he has no idea what to do with the prisoners. From what I understand though, a lot of them have done nothing wrong. One man that was convicted was guilty of being the chauffeur of Osama bin Laden. What the hell kind of crime is that?

boston.com has this really cool feature called The Big Picture. It’s journalism in pictures, kind of. Today it was “Scenes from Guantanamo Bay.” There is, however,  no torture, no visible mistreatment. Razor wire lines surround the outside, recreational areas exist, arrows painted on the ground point to the direction of Mecca. A Muslim prayer rung and Koran are provided to each prisoner, plus a hanging thing for the book to keep it nice. There are signs that say, “QUIET, PRAYER TIME.” They can even take classes and request books – Harry Potter being the most in demand.

Most of them are innocent and won’t have to stand trial, but they’re stuck there because their countries won’t take them back. The pictures seem so tame and almost OK, but in reading about it, it seems like a vile place that I’m sure the U.S. military and government spend a lot of time trying to forget about.

It seems to me, though, that closing it won’t solve anything. I guess life would be better without it, even though all those men’s lives are ruined. It’d be nice to say that someday we’ll all look back at this and laugh, but it’s not true. We’ll still be crying for this in the future, and what’s the point of living if all these people keep trying to make life worse for other people?

The Big Picture though, it’s pretty cool.

I used to live in Guantanamo Bay. Not in the prison, but on the naval base. I was only 8 years old at the time. I don’t remember too much about the prisoners, but I do remember walking out of the ER (I was there a lot!) and watching a man in orange one-piece suits walking out of the main entrance to the hospital once in a while. So obviously they are getting proper medical treatment, but that’s all I have to say on the matter. 🙂
